The craft for the day

In celebration of our last day of homeschooling for the year, I pulled out the gingerbread house kit and let the kids "have at it." I offer my utmost respect to anyone who would do this from scratch, by the way -- I just opted for the boxed kind (held by my sweet daughter Kathryn, who just lost her first tooth today!)

Thomas needed a bit of help with the frosting...

And here are five happy children after a gooey, candy-filled extravaganza..

Now, how long do you think this will last?

We made the exact same house today. You gotta love pre-baked houses!

It looks beautiful and your sweet children look so happy.

Ah, beautiful! As you know, Nana and Papa (Suburban Cowboy's Dad and Step-mom) host the annual Gingerbread Extravaganza each year. It was 2 Dec 06 this year and, if memory serves, Nana mixed, cut out, baked and assembled at least 20 (yes, twenty) houses, including 'stained glass' windows (crushed hard candy).

We have five houses in our dining room, except that the 'termites' have gotten them - all the exterior decorations have been consumed. (photos taken first, of course). I suggested that there be some 'earthquakes' so the very sturdy walls can come down - sides of three houses have succumbed to the hammer :)

I'm impressed that your kids could share just one house! It looks beautiful! Thanks for sharing it with us!

Suburban Cowgirl: I can't believe she made 20 houses from scratch!!! whoa... that takes creativity to a whole new level... like my dear friend M who makes crescent rolls from scratch. I didn't even know that was possible! (M, if you are reading this, you KNOW I admire your breadmaking abilities!!)

Katherine: Aren't these houses wonderfully easy? (well, except for us, who try every year to rush the "setting time," which makes our house look like it's on some sort of mudslide... eeeek)

What a GREAT idea!!! I didn't even KNOW that they came ready-to-assemble! The perfect thing for impatient kids. (And moms!)

Isn't it? God bless the person (whoever she was) who decided to make these things easy for moms and kids to do!!! Otherwise, my kids would NEVER have the opportunity to do something like this...
