Sometimes, the unexpected happens

And often, it's something wonderful, like getting a really cool present from your Dad (like this Nativity scene, that my Dad made for me this year. Thanks, Dad!)...

...or getting a pretty decent picture of your kids on the FIRST TRY, even though they had just come in from the pouring rain after Mass and were desperate to eat the doughnuts we had just bought. (look at Marie... isn't she just the cutest little thing?)

And then, sometimes the unexpected is something so awful, so shiveringly bad that words just don't do it justice. So here it is.

A roach.

Faithful readers know my extreme phobia of these disgusting, nasty creatures. So why have I taken a picture of something so vile?

This was crawling around INSIDE my waistband.

Oh yes.

I felt something... strange.. as I was cooking supper, and the brief thought went through my mind, "That couldn't be something... roachlike, could it?"

I wanted to believe... truly, I did!... that the planets could never align in such a way; that some things are so unspeakable as to never take place; that even in a fallen world, there is a line that cannot be crossed.

My childlike faith was shattered the moment I reached in to grab what I thought was a tag that was scratching me, and pulled out this nasty little hunk of evil BY ITS LEG.

My friend Malia, who was talking to me on the phone at the time, can attest to the fact that I did not scream, swear, or break out into hysterics. Other than a high pitched "Oh. My. GOSH!!!!" and a scurried rush to get the bug spray, I remained as calm as I possibly could.

Sometimes, the unexpected happens. It happened to me, and I was brave.

Now if only I could get my skin to quit crawling...

Oh yuck! My skin is crawling just reading about it. I've always lived in the South and thus have always lived where there are roaches, but in all of my 37 years of living have never, ever gotten used to them. When we lived in Savannah, the roaches were exceptionally big and in that warm, humid climate they were abundant. Yuck, yuck, yuck!

I know! My skin is still crawling, and I will NOT put my feet down on the floor now. I am sitting cross-legged on my computer chair and plan on staying that way!

Nasty, nasty creatures... ewww... yuck...

EEEUUUUWWWWW... my skin is crawling in sympathy... I almost screamed FOR you!

And it totally distracts from that gorgeous photo of your kids!

I remember the first time I lived in the South (my husband was stationed at Ft. Benning, GA) and I had lived my entire 23 years in New England. I stepped out into our backyard one day and thought our cat had caught a mouse only to discover that the rodent was not a mouse but the largest (and fortunately deadest!) roach I had ever seen.

My skin is crawling for you.

God Bless,
Jane

Beth, I think I'd rather have a month full of snow and slush too!

Oh my gosh! I know your phobia because I share it. That is just unspeakable! Ew. Yuck. (shiver). We had a three inch long "toe biter" in our pool last year. It could swim! It could stay under warer at the bottom of the pool for 20 minutes and still live. Vile, disgusting creatures. I have lived in the South all of my life and will never get used to roaches and their ilk. (shiver again)
