More Virgin Mary, Less Virgin Islands

I love this post that Fr. Martin did on NPR! Read all about his "campaign" to remind us all to give the Holy Family top billing at Christmas this year!

I gotta admit, he's preaching to the choir on this one. I'm a stickler for Christmas cards, myself. No Santas, no snowmen, no soft wintery Thomas Kincade scenes. Thanks to the example my mom set, it has to have a picture of the Holy Family on it, or it's one of those calligraphy cards extolling the Name of Jesus.

Does that make me holy? No. Of course not.

But it just seems... more appropriate... to me to send out cards that proclaim the "reason for the season," rather than generic "holiday wishes" and hoping you get lots of snow.

Does anyone remember that "politically correct Christmas" email that came out several years ago:

The woman spoke again: "There is one thing, though. Religious holidays are important, but can't we learn to celebrate them in ways that unite, not divide? For instance, instead of all this business about 'Gloria in excelsis Deo,' why not just 'Season's Greetings'?"

Mary said, "You mean my son has entered human history to deliver the message, 'Hello, it's winter'?"

As funny as that was, it has stuck with me ever since I first read it. May we use this time, and all of the festivities associated with it, to proclaim the true meaning of Christmas!

I needed this post! I just spent hours pouring over the Target Christmas photo card website, only to find one "Holy Family" card that fit my same criteria. The dark midnight blue of the border, means that our Christmas photo needs to be retaken with the kids wearing white clothes. Thanks for reminding me why I'm doing all this extra work!
